Our classes made salt and flour maps of the four main islands of Japan.

Start by pasting a copy of a map to cardboard, mix ingredients, and put compound over map.

If possible, try to be sure to incorporate topography into the lesson.

Paint and label and show it off!

We rented two museum teaching kits from the Boston Children's Museum. The kits gave us some of the ideas for our projects.

It's important to explore the three different styles of Japanese writing - Hirigana, Katakana, and Kanji.

And, of course, origami is very important. Our younger children made the cat and the samurai helmet.

We explored the way the Japanese dress traditionally

and the way they eat.

One of the kits we rented had some exhibit materials.

We explored the World Wide Web using John Donaldson's site and others. The children used worksheets to focus their learning.

Every theme should be celebrated with an open house.

This bulletin board directs people to come to our open house.
